MasterChef Winner Judges Catering Competition at City College Plymouth

On Thursday 21 March, City College Plymouth was delighted to welcome local chef and joint winner of ‘MasterChef the Professionals’, Anton Piotrowski, to judge its annual Young Chef Team Challenge competition.

Every year the College holds the competition, which gives local secondary school students the opportunity to show off their culinary skills. This year’s competing schools included Brook Green Centre for Learning, Devonport High School for Girls, Devonport High School for Boys, Dartmouth Academy, Eggbuckland Community College, Sir John Hunt Community Sports College, Launceston College, Stoke Damerel Community College and Saltash Community School.

Teams of three students from each school were asked to design a healthy, balanced menu suitable for two players from Plymouth Raiders Basketball Team, who also attended and judged the event. Other judges included Robert Bateman, Executive Chef at the Berry Head Hotel, Richard Hunt, Executive Chef at The Grand Hotel, and the now famous Anton Piotrowski, Head Chef and Director of The Treby Arms.

Anton Piotrowski has a strong affinity with the College, where his chef career began back in 1998 when he joined the College’s Professional Chefs and Food Service course. Anton is very passionate about his profession and about helping the next generation of chefs which makes him the ideal judge for this exciting competition.

Talking about his time at the College, Anton said “While I was at College I learnt the groundings for everything that I know today – the basics for making sauces and pastries. But it was not just about cooking and being in the kitchens. We were given an insight into the whole business – you worked in the restaurant, at the front of house, so you understood the importance of customer service.”

Jess Driscoll, Youth Liaison and Events Assistant at the College said: “The Young Chef Team Challenge competition was a fantastic event, showing incredible talent from the students that took part.

“The winning team from Devonport High School for Girls have won some amazing prizes including a private cooking experience at the Treby Arms with Anton Piotrowski, tickets to the Plymouth Raiders basketball game and the Young Chef Team Challenge trophy which will be presented to them by Anton after the Easter holidays.”
