City College Plymouth Students Cook a ‘post work out’ meal for the Plymouth Raiders
Catering students from City College Plymouth are putting their skills to the test by cooking lunch for local basketball team, Plymouth Raiders.
The players will be served a ‘post work out’ meal, in the College’s PL1 Restaurant, which focuses on recovery nutrition to help maximise performance.
The players train regularly at the College and nutrition care is a priority for their strength and conditioning coach. Liaising with the Sports Science Department, Chef Lecturer, David Beazley worked with Level 2 Professional Cookery students to design a menu that would provide a healthy nutritious lunch following the players’ strenuous workout.
Cookery student, Stuart Scoular, said: “It was interesting to find out about the nutritional needs of an athlete and createdishes that will look and taste great whilst giving the playersthe required nutrition.”
Head of Hospitality and Catering at the College, Helen Marshall, said: “The lunch provides an opportunity to blend the expertise of the two curriculum areas- showcasing the hospitality students’ excellent cooking skills in providing appropriate healthy eating options for elite athletes, with the dedication to athletic care from the sports science department.
“Having an understanding of diet and nutrition is an important aspect of the catering students’ training and being able to try out their menu on professional athletes gives an added value experience to their learning.”
