Bristol Chefs’ Forum Members Judge Regional Semi Final of The Rotary Young Chef Competition
Bristol Chefs’ Forum Chef Members Paul O’Neill (Berwick Lodge), Mark Veale (Thornbury Castle) and Matt Lord (The Bristol Hotel) recently judged the Bristol regional semi final of The Rotary Young Chef Competition held at St Katherine’s School in Pill.
The Rotary Young Chef Competition is a well established and successful competition organised and promoted by Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland and sponsored by Filippo Berio. It is a four stage national competition to support and encourage development of cookery skills.
This competition aims to encourage young people to:
- Learn how to cook a healthy meal
- Develop food presentation skills
- Consider food hygiene issues
- Develop organisational and planning skills
- Develop an ability to cope in a demanding situation
At the semi final on 11 February at the Leaf Restaurant, St Katherine’s School, Pill, Samantha Rides from St Katherine’s School, Pill and Eve Szczelkun from Redland Green School were selected to go forward to the Rotary District final to be held 28 February at Cotswold School, Bourton-on-the Water.
Sam’s main course was pork belly with rhubarb jelly followed by chocolate and hazelnut praline mousse with blood orange, whilst Eve prepared scallops on a pea puree garnished with bacon and peas as a starter followed by beetroot and smoked mackerel risotto served with creme fraiche followed by fig frangipane tart with thyme and orange served with mascarpone.
